1st National Park!
We arrived in Alamogordo, New Mexico around dinner time. After two long days driving through Texas eating fast food, we needed a good meal! Our amazing family friends Joe and Sarah gifted us road trip funds while we stayed in Georgia with them and we decided to treat ourselves to Alamogordo's best restaurant - D. H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro. When we sat down for dinner we couldn't stop laughing at the fact that we missed seeing each other's faces! We stared at the side of each other's face for two days in the car. Now, sitting across the table from each other we made funny comments like "Wow I guess you are good-looking! A lot better than the side of your face." cracking jokes is a necessity when you are cooped up in a 6 ft wide car cabin.
After our yummy dinner and wine flight we set out for White Sands National Park to catch the sunset at 8:07 pm. There were no rangers in sight, only excited visitors picking out their dune mounds to perfectly view the New Mexican sunset.
We parked and tried to take one of our big Tupperware container lids down the dunes like a sled. To prevent embarrassment we will sum that experience up to a - failure. Ha!
We hiked out to a secluded dune, barefoot, and let our hands and feet sink into the sand as the sun sank behind the mountains. We loved it. Amazing way to start our adventures.
As we ventured back to the car we discussed the likelihood of us returning. To Dom's point - the next visit will need to include some beer, wine, and charcuterie! Then sunset at the White Sands would be PERFECT! Maybe that should be a future business venture of ours... preparing adult beverage picnics for White Sands tourists...
Our original plan was to stay in El Paso for the night and catch the sunrise at White Sands. Instead, as we drove through Texas we knew we had enough caffeine-high energy to push to New Mexico. Because it was so last minute, we are rolling on a budget, and it is Alamogordo, New Mexico, we kicked off our epic road trip with a wonderful (not so clean) night stay at the Alamogordo Super 8! (SO excited to not go back! LOL).
We credit the title to Dom's mom, Andrea...
Dom: "Good morning. We just had a night's rest at the highly respected Super 8."
Ozzy: "SMH 😂”
Andrea: "Super 8 makes Motel 6 feel like the Ritz 😂”
